Why isn't my diet working?
One of the best parts about being a trainer is that at parties or at restaurants people come up to me and tell me their entire exercise regimen and diet and then ask "so why isn't this working?"
I think they expect some miracle answer to do with hormone levels or some outlier in their genetics or some magical exercise they haven’t learned yet or a secret schedule that only jacked Tibetan monks know.
Unfortunately the answer is much more obvious, boring and habit related than they want to hear. Their fitness and nutrition programs aren't working for one of 2 boring, obvious reasons, or maybe both.
1. They’re not working hard enough in the gym
2. They’re lying about what you're eating
Yes, there are some conditions that apply to a very small segment of the population that make muscle growth or weight loss difficult, but you most likely do not fall into that category.
The problem isn't having a condition like a rare thyroid disease or being a non-responder to weight training or something Dr. Google told you occurs in .02% of the population with Scandanavian ancestors.
The problem is cherry picking your symptoms to convince yourself there's a biological reason you can't get in shape that is outside your control. If you spend more time googling “why isn’t this working” than ACTUALLY putting in the work to make it happen you’re on the wrong path.
It's 99% likely that your health is 100% in your control. But you have to take responsibility for that control, and be ready to put in the boring work to make it happen.
